This work by Koyoharu Gotouge, one of the latest mega-hits in Japan’s Shonen Jump, takes place in the feudal Japan of the Taisho Era, albeit in a version infused with fantasy elements, such as friendly demons who feast on human flesh. It tells the adventures of Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted and gentle young man who lives in the mountains with his mother and five siblings, earning a living by selling charcoal.
One day, while returning from his work, a villager suggests that Tanjiro spend the night at his house to avoid being eaten by an Oni (demon). Tanjiro agrees, but upon returning home, he discovers that although he escaped, his entire family was devoured by a demon, except for his younger sister Nezuko, who ended up becoming one of them! Desperate for help, Tanjiro encounters a demon slayer named Giyu Tomioka (a classic friend-rival with a rather stoic demeanor), who notices that Nezuko strangely retains enough of her humanity to want to protect her brother. Surprised by this and impressed by Tanjiro’s combat skills, Giyu suggests that he visit his master. Thus begins Tanjiro’s adventures to become a demon slayer, seeking a cure for his sister and vengeance for his family, all while encountering unexpected friends and rivals.
